Group Mentoring (Affinity Groups or Networking Groups)
This model involves a mentor who is assigned several mentorees who meet as a group
usually once a month or every six weeks. It combines hierarchical mentoring with
peer mentoring. Though a program may have many groups, most groups have usually
4-6 individuals so as to provide enough opportunities for each group member to participate
in the group process and get their needs met.
Group programs are usually targeted to a specific population: e.g. managers, new
hires, etc. However, it is most often used for diversity purposes and can be called
affinity groups or networking groups. Unlike the other two models of self-directed mentoring and managed mentoring, this one does not usually
involve the one-on-one personal relationship. For this reason, this model is often
combined with one or both of the other two models.
